Dept. of Labor Release New Report; Construction Jobs Are Increasing in North Central CT
Contrary to popular belief, the construction industry is poised to heat up in North Central Connecticut, adding as many as 30,000 projected jobs in the next five years. These jobs have the highest concentration in the areas of Hartford, East Hartford, New Britain, Bristol, Canton and Simsbury.

Gov. Malloy Announces Selection of Stefan Pryor as Commissioner of Department of Education; Praises Choice of a “Turnaround Leader”
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced the selection of Stefan Pryor to be the new Commissioner of the State Department of Education, and praised the choice of a “turnaround leader” by the State Board of Education. Pryor headed the education department at the Partnership for New York City, a leading business/civic organization, and co-founded New Haven’s Amistad Academy, an acclaimed public charter school.

Gov. Malloy Announces FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers Open Across State
Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced today that FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will be opening in every county of the state – and two in New Haven County – on Thursday, September 8 to assist home owners and businesses affected by Tropical Storm Irene.

Thursday: Gov. Malloy Discusses Construction Jobs Outlook- Visits Seidel Corp., Curtis Packaging on Jobs Tour, Attends State 9/11 Memorial Service
On Thursday morning, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will join Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra and Department of Labor Commissioner Glenn Marshall for a news conference to discuss a five-year outlook on construction jobs in north central Connecticut. A new report, developed by Capital Workforce Partners, projects that the state will see a substantial growth in construction jobs in that part of the state over the next five years and skilled workers will be needed to meet the demand.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman, on behalf of the State of Connecticut, will hold a memorial service for the state’s victims of September 11, 2001 at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. The sculpture made in part from aluminum cladding from the World Trade Center will also be unveiled, honoring those the state lost.

Governor Malloy, Insurance Commissioner Announce Additional Carriers Waiving Higher-Cost Deductibles
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Insurance Commissioner Thomas B. Leonardi today announced that several more insurance companies, including Allstate, have agreed to waive the higher cost hurricane deductible for coastal property owners in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene.

Gov. Malloy Releases List of $135 Million in Budget Cuts
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today released a list of $135 million in savings and efficiencies across state government, which are part of $700 million in labor-management savings. While the SEBAC agreement was eventually ratified, and the vast majority of cuts that had been proposed in the so-called ‘Plan B’ budget plan will not go forward, these savings are based on ideas put forward during that process.

Gov. Malloy: Residents Affected by Tropical Storm Irene May be Eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that because a major disaster was declared by President Obama in the State of Connecticut due to Tropical Storm Irene, Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is available to residents of all eight Connecticut counties, including self-employed individuals, who are unemployed as a direct result of damages caused by the storm.

Gov. Malloy: Residents Seeking Federal Assistance Must Register with FEMA
After receiving notification of the federal assistance available to cities and towns, businesses, individuals, and non-profits, Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that residents who suffered damage as a result of Hurricane Irene must register with FEMA, by phone or online to access that aid.

Tuesday: Gov. Malloy Attends Waterside School Ceremony, Announces Launch of Stamford Innovation Center
On Tuesday morning, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will attend a ceremony celebrating the opening of the new location of Waterside School in Stamford. The private school, founded in 2001 to provide high-quality education to low-income students, serves over 100 students and is moving into its new facility, which has been financed completely through charitable contributions.
