Gov. Malloy Announces Statewide Graduation Rates Increase for Sixth Year in a Row, Reach Record High
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and State Department of Education (SDE) Commissioner Dianna Wentzell today announced that graduation rates in the state reached an all-time high during the 2016 school year, hitting 87.4 percent, and that graduation gaps continue to close. Connecticut students continue to graduate high school within four years at a significantly higher rate than the national average of 83.2 percent.

Gov. Malloy Announces Section of Correctional Institution in Montville to Close as Result of Declining Crime Rate and Prison Population
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that as a result of the continuing decline in the state’s crime rate and the resulting drop in the prison population, the Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) has closed the Radgowski Annex Building at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville. The closure of the building, which is capable of holding up to 254 inmates, will save the state approximately $3 million in annual operating costs.

Gov. Malloy: Flags Lowered to Half-Staff Thursday in Honor of John Glenn
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that – in accordance with a proclamation from President Donald J. Trump – U.S. and state flags in Connecticut should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, April 6, 2017, as a mark of respect for the memory of former U.S. Senator, veteran, and astronaut John Glenn, whose interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on that day.

Gov. Malloy Reminds Connecticut Residents the Deadline to Apply for Home Heating Assistance is May 1
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today is reminding Connecticut residents who need help paying their home heating bills for the 2016-2017 winter season that there is still time to apply for assistance under the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program. The general deadline for applications is May 1, 2017, however eligible households that are subject to a shut-off notice by a utility for heating bills have an extended deadline of May 15.

Malloy today announced that he is proclaiming Friday, March 31 through Sunday, April 2, 2017 as “Husky Weekend” in the State of Connecticut in recognition of the UConn women’s basketball team playing in the NCAA Final Four tournament on Friday night. Gov. Malloy: Towns Along CTfastrak Route Continue to Benefit from Transit-Oriented Development as System Reaches its Second Anniversary
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that as CTfastrak reaches its second anniversary, towns and cities with stations along the bus rapid transit system are continuing to benefit from the growth of transit-oriented development as multi-use projects are reinvigorating neighborhoods along its route. The bus rapid transit system launched on March 28, 2015 and provides direct service to and from Waterbury, Cheshire, Southington, Bristol, Plainville, New Britain, Newington, West Hartford, Hartford, East Hartford and Manchester with routes that take advantage of the bus-only CTfastrak roadway.

Gov. Malloy Announces Opportunities to Remediate and Revitalize Brownfields in Connecticut
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) is now accepting applications for its eleventh round of competitive grant funding for the state’s Brownfield Remediation Program, under which the state partners with local municipalities and economic development agencies to put blighted properties back into productive use. Under this round, a total of $4 million will be earmarked for remediation projects and $1 million will be reserved for assessment projects.

Governor and Mrs. Malloy to Host ‘Reimagining Justice’ Conference on Criminal Justice Reform on June 14 and 15 in Hartford
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and First Lady Cathy Malloy today announced they will convene a conference in Hartford this summer with criminal justice experts, leaders, and advocates from throughout the country to discuss the progress being made to reform criminal justice systems in the ongoing effort to reduce crime and end the cycle of mass incarceration. Former Senior Advisor to the President of the United States Valerie Jarrett will serve as the event’s keynote speaker, among other notable guest speakers to be announced over the next several weeks.
