You cannot renew online if any of the following scenarios are true for you: 

• You did not get a new photo taken the last time you renewed your ID.




• You are applying for a REAL ID license for the first time. To get a REAL ID, please apply in person.



• Your ID has been expired for more than 2 years. Please follow the procedure for obtaining a new ID card.


• You are living in a homeless shelter and wish to do a no fee renewal.


• You are a blind veteran and wish to do a no fee renewal.


• If your non-driver ID card is expired two or more years, follow the procedure for obtaining a new ID card.

 

If you cannot renew online, please renew in person or by mail instead.

Step 1: Gather what you’ll need

 

The renewal application form that you received in the mail (if available).

 

• Your current non-driver ID card, which must be presented.  


• If you do not have your ID, you must present one form of acceptable identification from the list of acceptable forms of identification.


• Payment for fee.  Please see acceptable forms of payment.
  
  

Step 2: Gather additional documents (if applicable)

 

• If you are applying for a REAL ID verified non-driver ID, you must bring additional accepted forms of identification. If you already have a verified ID, you do not need to re-apply. 


• If you have had a name change since your ID card was issued you must present an original or certified copy of a marriage license, civil union certificate, divorce decree, or a probate court name change document to verify the name change.


• If you are living in a homeless shelter, you are eligible for a no fee renewal. Please provide proof of residency from an authorized shelter or transitional housing location in Connecticut, you are eligible for a no fee registration.  The identification card application (form B-230) must be signed by an official from the shelter or transitional housing location.


• If you are a blind veteran, you are eligible for a no fee renewal. Please provide a Certificate of Blindness form from the Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind or a letter from a doctor/optometrist that they meet the definition of blind as defined in Connecticut General Statutes 1-1f(a) and provide a DD214 indicating they have been honorably discharged.

Appointments can be made at a DMV office, select AAA and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union locations (Milford | North Haven), or the West Haven City Hall.

 

NOTE:  AAA locations, Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union and West Haven City Hall may charge a convenience fee up to $8.00 per DMV transaction.

You can renew by mail in the following scenarios:

Military

You are active duty in the U.S. military or were honorably discharged in the last 60 days, you can renew your non-driver identification card by mail for free. Learn more about how military personnel can renew their non-driver identification card by mail for free. 

Medically unable to appear

You have a major medical condition and cannot go to a DMV branch. You may request a renewal of your non-driver identification card by mail by completing Form B-350 and Form CI-1.  

 

Temporarily out of state or country

You are currently not in Connecticut. You can renew by mail and the non-driver identification card will be mailed to the out of state/country address.

 

Incarcerated

If you are incarcerated, you can renew your non-driver identification card by mail. You must provide your inmate number. The non-driver identification card will be sent to your facility. 

 

You cannot renew by mail if any of the following scenarios are true for you:

 

• You have already renewed your ID once through the mail or online. 
  
  
• Your new ID will only be mailed to the mailing address you provide DMV. If you have mail forwarding you will NOT receive your ID.
  
  
• If you have established residency in another state, you must obtain a license in your state of residency and may not renew your Connecticut ID. 

To renew by mail:

 

• Complete a Request for a Connecticut Driver’s License/Identification Card by Mail (Form B-350). 


• Note: If request is because you are medically unable to appear, you must complete a Request to Renew or Obtain a Duplicate Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID Card by Mail Due to a Temporary Medication Condition (Form CI-1).


• Provide a check or money order made payable to “DMV” for the appropriate fee or you may pay the fee by credit card over the phone (please see instructions below).  All checks must be drawn on a United States Bank and made payable in United States funds.


• NOTE: Please send your renewal at least 10 days prior to expiration, especially if mailing from out of country. If you are mailing application and are paying by credit card, please wait 5 business days until calling with credit card information.

• You must fill out Connecticut Driver’s License/Identification Card by Mail (Form B-350) and (Form CI-1 -if applicable) 


• E-mail completed form(s) to DMV.CIU@ct.gov or fax to 860-263-5591.


• After one business day contact the Mail-in License Transaction Unit at (860) 263-5401 (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) to make a credit card payment (MASTERCARD, VISA OR DISCOVER ONLY).
