You may renew your driver’s license on your license expiration date or as early as 180 days (six months) before your driver’s license expires.

You cannot renew online if any of the following scenarios are true for you:

• You did not get a new photo taken the last time you renewed your driver’s license.
  
  
• You are applying for a REAL ID license for the first time. To get a REAL ID, please apply in person.

• You are not a US Citizen. Please make an appointment to renew in person.

• You have a commercial driver’s license. Learn how to renew a commercial driver’s license.

• You cannot renew if you have a drive only license.
  
  
• Your license is expired two or more years. Please follow the procedure for getting a new driver’s license.
  
  
• You have an S, V, A, or F endorsement. Please renew in person.
  
  
• You are in active duty in the U.S. military or were honorably discharged in the last 60 days and wish to do a no fee renewal. Learn more about how military personnel can renew their driver’s license.
  
  
• You do not have a first name or need to update your name. Please renew in person.

If you cannot renew online, please renew in person or by mail instead.

Step 1: Gather what you’ll need

• The renewal application form that you received in the mail (if available).


• Your current driver’s license, which must be presented.


• If you do not have your current license, you must present one form of acceptable identification from the list of acceptable forms of identification.  If DMV does not have your image on file, you will be required to present two forms of identification from the acceptable forms of identification list.


• Payment for fee.  Please see acceptable forms of payment.
  
  

Step 2: Gather additional documents (if applicable)

• If you are applying for a REAL ID verified license, you must bring additional accepted forms of identification. If you already have a "verified" license, you do not need to re-apply.


• If you have had a name change since your ID card was issued you must present an original or certified copy of a: marriage license;  civil union certificate; divorce decree; or a probate court name change document to verify the name change.


• If you are in active duty in the U.S. military and wish to do a no-fee renewal,  you must bring an Application for Waiver of Driver’s License Fee Form (PDF) and your active military ID.


• If you were honorably discharged from the U.S. military in the last 60 days and wish to do a no-fee renewal, you must bring an Application for Waiver of Driver’s License Fee Form (PDF) and an original copy of your DD-214. A DD-214 is also called a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.
  
  

Step 3: Make an appointment

Appointments can be made at a DMV office, select AAA and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union locations (Milford | North Haven), or the West Haven City Hall.

 

NOTE:  AAA locations, Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union and West Haven City Hall may charge a convenience fee up to $8.00 per DMV transaction.

“S.V.A.F” Holders

You must have a current, legible, unexpired medical certificate (dated within a year) completed by a Certified Medical Examiner on file with the DMV prior to renewal.  Please fax your current card to: (860) 263-5568 or email your current card to:  DMV.CDL@CT.GOV Printed confirmation notice of self-certification with DMV. Applicants must self-certify through the DMV website and print confirmation notice. Renewal application form that you received in the mail (if available).

 

“S” Holders

"S" endorsement operators must successfully pass all sections of the skills test in order to obtain the proper classification/endorsements on your license. You must wait two to five business days after you have passed your skills test to obtain endorsement on your license as skills test results from the field must be entered into the system prior to issuance.

Skills test must be dated within one year at renewal.

“V” Holders

Copy of training certificate (R-360) must be presented (dated within a year).

You can renew by mail in the following scenarios:

Military

You are active duty in the U.S. military or were honorably discharged in the last 60 days, you can renew your driver’s licenses by mail for free.  Learn more about how military personnel can renew their driver’s license by mail for free.

Medically unable to appear

You have a major medical condition and cannot go to a DMV branch. You may request a renewal of your driver license by mail by completing Form B-350 and Form CI-1.  Form P-147 is required to downgrade from a Driver License to a Non-driver ID card.  

Temporarily out of state or country

You are currently not in Connecticut. You can renew by mail and the license will be mailed to the out of state/country address.

Incarcerated

If you are incarcerated, you can renew your license by mail. You must provide your inmate number. The license will be sent to your facility.

 

You cannot renew by mail if any of the following scenarios are true for you:

• Your new driver's license or ID will only be mailed to the mailing address you provide DMV. If you have mail forwarding, you will NOT receive your driver's license or ID.
  
  
• Your last renewal was processed by mail or online. You will need to make an appointment to a DMV branch to take a new picture.
  
  
• You have a Commercial Driver License or Public Service Endorsements. To renew, you will need to voluntarily downgrade and complete Form P-147.
  
  
• You have a Drive Only license. You must renew at a DMV branch office. This service cannot be completed by mail.
  
  
• If you have established residency in another state, you must obtain a license in your state of residency and may not renew your Connecticut Driver’s license.

To renew by mail:

• Complete a Request for a Connecticut Driver’s License/Identification Card by Mail (Form B-350).


• Note: If request is because you are medically unable to appear, you must complete a Request to Renew or Obtain a Duplicate Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID Card by Mail Due to a Temporary Medication Condition (Form CI-1).


• Provide a check or money order made payable to “DMV” for the appropriate fee or you may pay the fee by credit card over the phone (please see instructions below).  All checks must be drawn on a United States Bank and made payable in United States funds.


• NOTE: Please send your renewal at least 10 days prior to expiration, especially if mailing from out of country. If you are mailing application and are paying by credit card, please wait 5 business days until calling with credit card information.

• If you do not receive an email with a payment link after two business days, contact the Central Issuance Operations Unit at (860) 263-5401 (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) to make a credit card payment (MASTERCARD, VISA OR DISCOVER ONLY).
