Obtaining a Motorcycle Endorsement
Knowledge testing for a motorcycle learner's permit is only provided by appointment only at DMV Offices.
Please carefully review the following information.
A motorcycle endorsement, designated by the letter "M" on a Connecticut Driver's License, allows you to operate a 2-or 3-wheel motorcycle on public highways. The motorcycle endorsement, designated by the letter "M" and the restriction "3" on a Connecticut Driver's License limits you to operate only a 3-wheel motorcycle on public highways.
To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, you must complete the following steps:
-
Possess a valid Connecticut Driver's License. If you do not have a driver's license, see how to obtain a Connecticut Driver's License if you are 16 or 17 years old or 18 and over.
- Present a notarized Certificate of Parental Consent (form 2-D) if under 18 years of age.
- Complete Application for Non-Commercial Driver's License (form R-229).
- Make an appointment for the motorcycle knowledge and vision tests at a DMV office. Make an appointment here. The 16-question knowledge test is based on information from the Connecticut Motorcycle Manual and the Connecticut Driver's Manual. Once you pass the motorcycle knowledge and vision tests, you have the option to obtain a motorcycle learner's permit. See information on how to obtain a motorcycle learner's permit.
-
Complete a novice motorcycle safety course approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles. The course certificate is valid for two years from date of completion. This course includes classroom and skills training on a motorcycle. See list of approved motorcycle safety course providers.
-
Once you have successfully completed a motorcycle safety course, you must go to a DMV HUB Office to have an "M" endorsement or an "M" endorsement with a "3" restriction added to your Connecticut Driver's License.
-
In order to remove the "3" restriction from a Connecticut Driver License, you must pass a novice motorcycle safety course approved my the Department of Motor Vehicles on a 2-wheel motorcycle. You will not be required to pass another knowledge test.
-
MILITARY PERSONNEL may be eligible for a waiver of the endorsement test.
What it will cost:
-
$40 testing fee for the motorcycle knowledge and vision tests.
-
$30 fee to have the "M" endorsement or the "M" endorsement with "3" restriction added to license.
-
$16 for motorcycle learner's permit (optional).
A re-exam is allowed any day after the initial failure with a new $40 testing fee. See acceptable forms of payment.
Once you earn a motorcycle endorsement, you will be subject to the following restrictions:
-
Drivers 18 years of age and older may not transport passengers for the first 90 days after obtaining a motorcycle endorsement.
-
Drivers 16 and 17 years old may not transport any passenger on a motorcycle for a period of six months after receiving his or her motorcycle endorsement.
-
In addition, Connecticut has specific laws for 16-and 17-year-old drivers that apply to the operation of a motor vehicle, including a motorcycle.
