The Firearms Unit receives evidence of various types and calibers of firearms. We also receive:

  • Firearm components
  • Ammunition
  • Ammunition components

Ammunition evidence is examined for microscopic markings. These markings identify the possible make and model of the firearm that may have used the ammunition evidence.

The lab submits images of the cartridge casings to National Integrated Ballistic Identification Network system (NIBIN). It is a database of high-resolution cartridge case images. These digital images can be compared to others from labs or law enforcement. This can determine if the same firearm was used, resulting in a "hit" in the database.

This unit also examines the evidence for tool mark comparisons. This evidence comes from forcible burglaries and property damage investigations. Toolmark evidence can be important in cases with unique markings. This kind of evidence may link several serial property crimes.
