Connecticut Forest Action Plan

The Connecticut Forest Action Plan acts as a guide for the Division of Forestry and hopefully inspires others to improve and protect Connecticut's forest resources for future generations.  Created in collaboration with many partners and stakeholders, the Forest Action Plan aims to identify issues and prioritize important areas, values, and needs.  The Connecticut Forest Action Plan analyzes the current conditions and trends of forests in Connecticut and lays out strategies and action steps to best plan for the future of the forested landscape.

Currently work has begun to update the Connecticut Forest Action Plan which will be completed by June 2020.  Outreach to stakeholders and interested parties is underway as is an update of the data used to assess current conditions in Connecticut's forests.  To find additional information on the Forest Action Plan, please view the CT Forest Action Plan 2020 Update.

An update to the Action Plan is required by the USDA Forest Service every 10 years.  The Connecticut Forest Action Plan was first completed in 2010 and in 2015 the USDA Forest Service required states to review their Forest Action Plan to make sure the plans were still current and relevant.  While the 2015 review was primarily an internal division process and not a complete update with major changes and substantial stakeholder input, some minor changes were made including:

  • the addition of a section reporting success stories contributing to three national priorities outlined by the USDA Forest Service (conserve, protect, enhance);
  • an update of some of the data to more current information; and
  • the addition of information regarding the discovery of emerald ash borer and southern pine beetle in the state.

2015 revision of the Connecticut Forest Action Plan

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Forestry Division greatly appreciates the contributions by all who participated in the development of the Forest Action Plan.  We look forward to addressing the issues and implementing the recommendations along with others in the coming years.
