Fee Schedule as Set by Hull Material

Prior to registering your boat, please read this DMV notice to all vessel owners

Effective January 1, 2020:  An Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Stamp fee will be collected from any person who registers or renews a registration of a boat, vessel or jet ski in Connecticut.  Boaters with out of state registrations who boat on Connecticut inland waters will also be required to pay an AIS fee. More info

Wooden Boats - Hull construction of wood:

  • 15-24 years old--fees obtained from column 2 (see above)
  • 25 years and older--fees obtained from column 3 (see above)

Special Exemptions

  • There a exemption from registration for any vessel less than 19 and 1/2 feet in length without any motor and is not a motorboat (such as a sailboat powered by sail alone and no use of any motor, including auxiliary).
  • There also is an exemption from registration for any vessel less than 19 and 1/2 feet in length and is propelled solely by oar or paddle.

Other Fees:

  • Length less than 15 feet powered by motor less than 15 HP - $7.50
  • Canoe with a motor - $7.50
  • Pontoon (not houseboat) $40.00
  • Aquatic Invasive Species fee - $5.00 (Renewal)
Title Fee: Model year 2017 or newer (for exempt vessels see form B-220). Administration fee is not applicable for vessels.
  • $25.00 for Title
  • $10.00 for Lien Holder if applicable

Commercial Fishing

Fee not to exceed $25.00 if boat is used principally for purpose of Commercial Fishing, if 50% of the owners adjusted gross income in the preceding tax year was obtained from Commercial Fishing. Commercial Fishing Affidavit (B-229) and a copy of approved valid OR256 or R654 (Or Farmers Tax Exemption Permit) is needed for original issue. OR256 or R654  (Or Farmers Tax Exemption Permit) obtained from and approved by the Department of Revenue Services. A Commercial Fishing Affidavit (B-229) is needed for all renewals. Compute fee based on the length of boat as usual and compare with $25.00. If computed fee is LESS than $25.00, charge computed fee. If computed fee is $25.00 or more, charge $25.00.


Non-Profit Organization

  • Boat owned by a non-profit organization -- $7.50 fee
  • Sales Tax Exempt Number must be noted on renewal application.

Flotilla

  • Not more than 2 boats owned by any Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary or non-profit corporation acting on behalf of such flotilla -- No fee.

Towns

  • Towns are not required to register if name of town is clearly marked on the boat; however, if a registration is issued a fee must be paid.

Expiration Date - April 30

  • Boats registered as of January 1 will expire April 30 of the following calendar year.

Cancellation

The owner of a boat shall notify the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles within 15 days and provide information as to:

  • Sale or transfer of ownership
  • Theft or loss
  • Destruction or abandonment of the boat
  • The notification shall be in writing and shall include the certificate of number or certificate of decal.

Change of Address

The owner of a registered boat shall notify the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles of a change of address within 15 days. Notice can be by letter or Change of Address (form B-58).
