DMV Offers Veteran Status:

American Flag on Licenses, IDs and License Plates

The CT Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), as part of the state’s recognition of veterans and their efforts, have added an American flag to the driver's license of nearly 10,000 veterans to establish their eligibility for various discounts, programs, and services. Veterans interested in this designation can apply through the CT Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Our administration was proud to create this initiative several years ago to better improve the delivery of services and benefits to the brave men and women who have selflessly served our nation. We want to ensure that the verification of their veterans' status is as simple as a quick check of their driver's license," said Governor Malloy.

“Our veterans have given so much to our country. I’m proud the state and DMV makes it easier to identify their status and assists them in applying for well-deserved benefits,” said Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman.

DMV Commissioner Michael Bzdyra added, “Veterans and their families deserve special recognition and our great appreciation for their service and sacrifice. DMV is proud to see nearly 9,000 Connecticut veterans carry these driver licenses.”

DMV also offers U.S. flag license plates to veterans and their spouses. A number of other special military plates representing various veterans’ groups are also available.

The license program offering the American flag to identify veterans is available in DMV offices and licensing partners. For a complete list go to www.ct.gov/dmv/offices.

A veteran applies first to the state Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The application can be downloaded online at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website by visiting “Apply for Veterans Flag on CT Driver License or ID Card.”

The flag is added either at renewal or for a first-time license or ID with no cost. There is a $30 charge to have a current credential re-made. DMV also provides a waiver of the license renewal fee for active service members and a one-time waiver for honorably discharged veterans. For more information, see the DMV website.

In addition, DMV offers a special license plate with a flag that veterans and their spouses can obtain as well as a number of special interest license plates representing various veterans’ groups.  Information on these and other military plates is available at ct.gov/dmv/military.
