State Police Investigate Police Shooting

On 8/24/11 at approximately 4:36 p.m. New London Police Department received a 911 call from the victim truck driver reporting that his truck was stolen while he was making deliveries of ice. New London Police Department broadcast a description of the stolen truck to all police units.

A New London Police Officer was taking a complaint from a citizen at the CVS Pharmacy located at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Bank Street when he observed the stolen truck turn onto Jefferson Avenue from Bank Street and the stolen truck flipped over onto its side. The New London Officer radioed to dispatch that the truck had crashed at Jefferson and Bank Streets he then approached the stolen truck from the front of the vehicle.  The New London Officer observed a black male standing upright inside the vehicle that was lying on its side. As the Officer approached the vehicle, numerous witnesses stated he ordered the male suspect inside the vehicle to show his hands. When the suspect failed to comply the Officer discharged his service weapon at the suspect who collapsed inside the vehicle.

The suspect was treated at the scene by EMS and transported to L&M Hospital in New London and then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now listed in serious condition.

The scene and vehicle was secured by New London Police and at the request of the New London State’s Attorney the Eastern District Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad Detectives were assigned to conduct the investigation into this shooting.  Troopers processed the scene gathering physical and forensic evidence. Troopers also interviewed numerous witnesses to the incident. The forensic Laboratory technicians also responded to the scene to asset in this investigation

A newspaper reporter was a witness to the incident and took numerous photos of the shooting incident.

The suspect is identified as Curtis Cunningham, DOB 9/8/83

                                           432 Shelton Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut.

The New London Police Officer is identified as Officer Thomas Northup. Officer Northup is a 3 1/2 year veteran of the department. Officer Northup will be temporarily assigned to administrative duty pending the completion of the shooting investigation.
