CONNECTICUT STATE POLICE MAJOR CRIME UNIT

             INVESTIGATES POLICE SHOOTING

On 12/29/05 at approximately 11:00 p.m. a West Haven Police Officer observed a male suspect driving a van in West Haven. The male suspect was known by police to be wanted on numerous felony warrants and it had also been reported that the suspect was possibly armed.  

The Police Officer attempted to stop the suspect in West Haven but the suspect engaged the officer in pursuit.  The pursuit led into the City of New Haven where the suspect crashed into parked cars on Eagle Street.  The male suspect then fled on foot in an attempt to elude capture by the West Haven Police Officer.  

The Officer chased the suspect on foot into the rear yards and alleys off of Eagle Street. The officer gave numerous verbal commands to the suspect to surrender. The verbal commands were ignored. The suspect suddenly made a threatening move that caused the officer to discharge his service weapon striking the suspect one time.  

The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to Yale New Haven Hospital emergency room where he is reported to be in stable condition. The West Haven Officer was transported to St Raphael’s Hospital Emergency Room where he was treated and released. The identification of the West Haven Police Officer is being withheld at this time. He is a three-year veteran of the West Haven Police Department.  

At the request of the New Haven State’s Attorney the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad responded to the scene to conduct the investigation into this police shooting.  

West Haven Police will arrest the suspect for numerous charges related to this incident.   The crash that took pace on Eagle Street in New Haven will be investigated by the New Haven Police Department. 

State Police are asking anyone who witnessed this incident to call State Police at 203 393-4200. All calls will be kept confidential.

The entire incident remains under Investigation.
