DUNS Number Requirement

All applicants, except individuals, must have a DUNS number when applying for a grant from the Connecticut Office of the Arts. Obtaining a DUNS number is a free, straightforward process.

What is a DUNS number?

Established in 1962, Dun & Bradstreet’s Data Universal Numbering System, commonly known as theD-U-N-S® Number, is a unique global business identification system that identifies, validates, and links to more than 280 million businesses worldwide.

The D-U-N-S Number is a nine-digit non-indicative numbering sequence and is assigned to all types of business organizations including sole proprietorships, corporations, partnerships, non-profits, and government entities. The D-U-N-S Number is constant— it stays with a business throughout the lifecycle including name, address and corporate structure changes and even bankruptcy.

The D-U-N-S Number is not just a number—it is a system for maintaining accurate, comprehensive and timely information – and it is issued rapidly andfree of chargefor all entities wanting to do business with the U.S. Federal Government.

Why do I need it?

The Connecticut Office of the Arts began requiring a DUNS number on all grant applications in 2017 (FY18). It is required on applications for any grant administered by COA that includes National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) dollars.

How do I find out if my organization already has a DUNS number?

The executive director, business manager, board treasurer or accountant is likely to know and be able to provide your organization’s DUNS number if you already have one.

I am an individual artist who is applying for a COA grant, do I need a DUNS Number?

No, an individual is not required to have a DUNS Number.  Only business organizations including sole proprietorships, corporations, partnerships, non-profits, and government entities are required to include their DUNS Number when applying for a grant.

How do I get a DUNS Number?

An authorizing official of your organization should request a DUNS number. If you do not have a DUNS number, you can request one by phone or online.  Phone: Call D&B at 866-705-5711. You are seeking an option for a state grantee. You should receive your DUNS number by the end of the call. Online: Submit your web request at fedgov.dnb.com/webform. Online requests typically take 24 hours to process.

Is there a fee for registering for a DUNS number?

No. D&B should not charge you a fee. You are also not obligated to purchase any of their products.
