Troopers Make Arrest Following Haddam Neck Residential Burglary Investigation

Haddam Neck, CT. (August 31, 2017): Connecticut State Troopers arrested a Manchester man following a Haddam Neck burglary investigation that occurred June 2017.

On June 2, 2017 at approximately 1:45 p.m., troopers from Troop F-Westbrook initiated a residential burglary investigation on Moodus Road in Haddam Neck after the victims returned home to find that their residence had been burglarized and cash, credit cards and coins had been stolen.

While troopers were conducting the investigation and searching the scene for evidence, they located a shoe print outside of a first floor window where forced entry was gained into the residence.

As the investigation continued, troopers were led to the I-95 southbound Madison service area/rest stop where one of the victim’s stolen credit cards had been used by the suspect. During the weeks of the investigation, troopers identified Steven Aberg, operating a 2000 Toyota Celica GT, as the suspect. Aberg was subsequently identified as the suspect in numerous other residential burglaries throughout Connecticut. Aberg was also identified on surveillance video driving his Toyota Celica to the Madison rest stop wearing black Nike footwear on June 2nd, 2017. Further investigation revealed that the type of Nike shoe Aberg was wearing was similar to that of the Nike Cortez shoe which matched the shoe print impression left outside the residence on Moodus Road.

Upon conclusion of the investigation troopers applied for, and were granted an arrest warrant for Aberg by the superior court.

On July 11, 2017 at approximately 3:00 p.m., troopers from Troop A-Southbury attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Steven Aberg, who had an active warrant for his arrest, while he was operating his red Toyota Celica and possibly armed with a weapon.

Troopers attempted to stop Aberg on the I-84 eastbound exit 25 off-ramp in Waterbury; however Aberg accelerated in an attempt to flee troopers. As Aberg fled, he intentionally struck a SUV that was stopped in front of him. Aberg used his Toyota to push the SUV out of the way and began to engage troopers in pursuit on Reidville Drive in Waterbury despite his vehicle being heavy damaged. Aberg eventually lost control of his Toyota on Reidville Drive and struck the back of a Freightliner truck.

After crashing into the Freightliner, Aberg exited his Toyota and attempted to flee from troopers on foot by jumping over the concrete barrier and running towards I-84. Troopers were able to subdue Aberg and take him into custody.

Upon Aberg’s arrest, troopers located a pair of black Nike Cortez shoes inside the Toyota. No weapons were located. Minor injuries were reported from the occupants of the SUV.

Steven Aberg (dob 12/2/88) of 134 East Center St., Manchester, CT., was transported to Troop A where he was charged with Disobeying the Signal of an Officer, Engaging Police in Pursuit, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment 1^st Degree, Interfering with an Officer, and Failure to have Minimum Insurance.  Aberg was held on $100,000.00 bond and transferred to the New Haven Correctional facility.

On August 30, 2017 Aberg was transferred from New Haven to the Middlesex Superior Court where he was charged with Burglary 3^rd Degree and Larceny 6^th Degree for his involvement in the Haddam Neck residential burglary. Aberg was held at court on an additional $25,000.00 bond.
