Detectives Seize Heroin and Cocaine following Collaborative Investigation


Norwich, CT. (July 13, 2017):   Detectives arrested three people following a lengthy investigation where they seized narcotics, cash, and an elaborate surveillance and communication system.   

On July 12, 2017 the Connecticut State Police Tactical Unit (SPTU), Statewide Narcotics Task Force-East Office (SNTF-E), Troop E - Montville Narcotics Suppression Team, and the Norwich Police Department served two Search and Seizure warrants at residences in Norwich: 171 Boswell Ave. and 29 Oakridge St.

The search warrants were the result of a several month-long collaborative investigation into the distribution of heroin and crack cocaine by a Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO) controlled by David Matthews.

As a result of the search and seizure warrant, detectives seized a total of 27.4 grams of heroin, 22.4 grams of cocaine, 2.8 grams of crack cocaine packaged for sale, 13 Suboxone strips, 11 transdermal Fentanyl patches, 5 ecstasy pills, and 47.6 grams of MDMA packaged for sale.  In addition, $6,900.00 in cash, an elaborate surveillance and communication system, and numerous items used for the packaging and processing narcotics was seized.

Upon completion of the search, detectives took three people into custody and transported them to Troop E-Montville for processing.  David Matthews (dob 10/15/85) of Norwich was charged with Possession of a Hallucinogen, Possession of a Hallucinogen With Intent to Sell (WITS), 4 counts of Possession of Narcotics, 4 counts of Possession of Narcotics WITS, and Operating a Drug Factory. Tony Strothers (dob 08/09/78) of Norwich, CT. was charged with Possession of Heroin, Possession of Crack Cocaine and Possession of Crack Cocaine WITS, and Crysta Wydra (dob 04/28/89) of Gales Ferry, CT. was charged with Possession of Crack Cocaine and Risk of Injury to a Minor.

Matthews was held on $250,000.00 bond and scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on July 13, 2017.  Strothers was also held on bond and scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on July 13, 2017.  Wydra was released on $20,000.00 non-surety bond and scheduled to appear at Norwich Superior Court on July 26, 2017.
