                  STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE SHOOTING IN BERLIN

Today 01/08/07 at approximately 9:30 a.m.the Berlin Police Department received a 911 call reporting that a shooting had just taken place at the Mount Royal Motel located at 2447 Berlin turnpike in Berlin,Ct. It was reported that two Deputy U.S. Marshals were on the scene.

Berlin Police officers and EMS responded to the shooting scene. EMS personnel pronounced the male subject deceased at the scene.  Berlin Police Officers secured the scene and at the request of Berlin Police Chief Paul Fitzgerald the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad responded to the scene to conduct the investigation into this shooting.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the Two Deputy U.S. Marshals had arrived at the motel just before 9:30 a.m. to take the male subject into custody on a Federal Violation of Probation charge. The deceased had answered the door to the motel room and let the Marshals into the room. The deceased was preparing to leave with the Marshals when he suddenly pulled a personal weapon and shot himself. The U.S. Deputy Marshals provided emergency care while awaiting EMS response. No other injury was sustained.

The Office of the Chief state’s Medical examiner will conduct a post mortem examination to determine the exact manner and cause of the deceased.  The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notif8ication of next of kin.

The case is under investigation by the State Police Major Crime Squad.
