Open Space - Grants and Financial Assistance

Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program

(CGS Section 7-131d to 7-131k, inclusive)

The State's open space financial aid program available to towns, non-profit land conservation organizations, and water companies to acquire land for the protection of local outdoor recreation, unique natural features, fish and wildlife habitat, and land which can be classified as Class I or Class II water supply property.

Eligible Parties:  Municipalities, nonprofit land conservation organizations and Water Companies.
Availability: Competitive grant rounds are opened once per year, if funds are available.

Grants may be awarded for the purchase of land as open space that is:

  1. Valuable for recreation, forestry, fishing, conservation of wildlife or natural resources;
  2. A prime natural feature of the state's landscape;
  3. Habitat for native plant or animal species listed as threatened, endangered or of special concern;
  4. A relatively undisturbed outstanding example of a native ecological community which is uncommon;
  5. Important for enhancing and conserving water quality;
  6. Valuable for preserving local agricultural heritage; or
  7. Eligible to be classified as Class I or Class II watershed land (water companies only).

Urban Green and Community Gardens Grant Program

(CGS Section 7-131d to 7-131k, inclusive)

The State’s financial aid program available to towns (often in partnership with local non-profit organizations) to develop or enhance urban open spaces for public enjoyment and/or environmental education.  Promotion of open space in an urban setting may include, but may not be limited to, the development of a community garden or reclaiming and enhancing existing open space for the public's use.  Projects must take place within the territorial limits of a “distressed municipality” or “targeted investment community” (CGS section 32-9p).

 

Eligible Parties:  Municipalities, or municipalities partnering with a non-profit organization.
Availability: Competitive grant rounds are opened once per year, if funds are available.
