Gov. Malloy Directs Flags To Half Staff Tuesday In Recognition Of Peace Officers Memorial Day

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day, a national observance that pays tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. It is recognized annually during National Police Week.

Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags, including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise, should also be lowered during this same duration of time.

“The men and women who dedicate their careers to protecting the lives of others personify what it means to be a public servant and to selflessly serve their communities,” Governor Malloy said. “Day in and day out, whether they are on duty at the moment or not, law enforcement live their lives not knowing what the next minute can bring – at a moment’s notice they are ready to respond to an emergency and run toward harm, all for the sake of people they might not even know. This year’s observance is particularly meaningful for those of us in Connecticut as we continue to mourn the loss of State Police Trooper First Class Kevin Miller, who was killed in the line of duty just seven weeks ago. We will forever honor the officers who have given their lives and we salute their service. We also show our respects to their families, who have sacrificed incredibly, and we thank them so much.”

“We are so grateful to our law enforcement officers and the work they do every day to protect residents and uphold the laws of our state,” Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman said. “Despite the danger and personal risks, they show total commitment – their bravery and integrity sets an example for us all. This year, as we thank our law enforcement officers and their families for the many sacrifices they have made, we remember our own Trooper First Class Kevin Miller and hold his family and friends in our thoughts.”
