Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Wyman Statements on CBO Analysis of Ending Affordable Care Act Subsidies
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman today released the following statements in response to the release of a report by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on the impact of halting payments to insurance companies under the Affordable Care Act, as President Trump has threatened to do:
Governor Malloy said, “This CBO score confirms that the President’s threat to cut subsidies to insurers, which offset costs for affordable coverage to low-income individuals, will drive up premiums for all. Let’s be clear – this is not a failure of the Affordable Care Act, it is a deliberate effort of President Trump to sabotage healthcare for millions of Americans in an attempt to fulfill an impetuous campaign promise. Democrats have been ready and willing to work alongside their Republican colleagues to improve our healthcare system, but the core tenets of every proposal brought forth by Republicans to date are unacceptable – millions would lose coverage, premiums would increase, and Medicaid would be eviscerated, leaving our most vulnerable without access to affordable coverage and care. Make no mistake, we are no longer living under the Affordable Care Act – this intentional destabilization of the markets is Trumpcare in action, recklessly risking the lives of Americans.”
Lt. Governor Wyman said, “In independent surveys, both the Congressional Budget Office and the Kaiser Foundation found that the healthcare marketplaces were stable. President Trump and Congressional Republicans could build on that as the launching off point for a strong 2018 enrollment. The newest CBO analysis underscores what happens by taking the opposite approach, as they have done. Threatening to remove the cost-sharing options not only destabilizes the marketplaces, but also guarantees cost increases for everyone. It’s going in the wrong direction rather than working to improve a law that is already serving hundreds of millions across the country.”
