Gov. Malloy and LT. Gov. Wyman Statements on World Refugee Day
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman today released the following statements regarding World Refugee Day, an observance set aside by the United Nations and held annually on June 20 to commemorate the strength, courage, and perseverance of refugees across the globe:
Governor Malloy said, “We are a nation of refugees and immigrants – those who came to our shores in search of a better life for themselves and their children. It is vital that we never forget our past to ensure that we may better serve this generation’s refugees. Across Connecticut, communities, places of worship, and families have opened their homes and hearts to help those fleeing war and terror. To those refugees around the globe who fear that that our country is no longer welcoming, rest assured, we will not allow the fundamental principles of our nation to be changed by one person or one moment in time.”
Lt. Governor Wyman said, “Our history has taught us that when we have an opportunity to save our fellow humans from war, violence, and certain death, we should. The consequences of inaction are well documented and horrifying – they are deeply regrettable moments in our development as a nation and as a people. Time and again we’ve come together to say ‘never again,’ and that is the spirit that underpins our desire to open our doors and support those fleeing the direst circumstances in their own homelands. The work to promote human dignity, civil rights, and human rights doesn’t end at our borders. We must do all we can to offer support and refuge to citizens of the world.”
