DMV has extended expiration dates for driver's licenses, ID cards and learner's permits. If you are sick, we ask in the public interest that you take advantage of the extension and please not visit a DMV facility. This will help safeguard your neighbors, families and our staff. We also ask that no children or elderly visit a DMV facility unless absolutely necessary. See all DMV advisories here.

Home Training Requirements

Parents may choose to train their 16/17 year old through home training instead of using a commercial driving school for all of the required 30 classroom hours and 40 hours of on the road instruction.  Home trained teens must first obtain a Learner Permit, and complete the 8 hour Safe Driving Practices Class at a licensed commercial or secondary driving school.

If a parent/guardian chooses to provide home training for any portion of the required hours of training, the following requirements must be met:

  1. The equivalent of 30 hours classroom training which must include the 8-hour Safe Driving Practices Class offered at commercial and secondary driving schools, including a 2-hour Mandatory Parent Training.
  2. 40 hours of practice driving with a “Qualified Trainer.”
