Secretary Merrill Statement on Trump Administration Announcement Abandoning the Citizenship Question

“Today’s decision by the Trump administration to back down and stop trying to include the so-called “citizenship question” in the 2020 census is an enormous victory for ensuring that the census accurately counts every person in Connecticut, as the Constitution requires.

“The ‘citizenship question’ was a nakedly partisan attempt to benefit, in their own words, ‘Non-Hispanic Whites and Republicans’ at the expense of everyone else. Partisanship and racial politics have no place in the United States Census.

“From federal funds to reapportionment to redistricting, an accurate census count is critical to ensuring that Connecticut receives a fair shake and its fair share from the federal government. Today is a day to celebrate, but tomorrow we will continue to lay the groundwork to ensure that everyone in Connecticut is counted.”
