Election Results to be Audited from Selected Polling Locations

A manual count of ballots from five percent of all polling places to be matched against machine totals

HARTFORD – Secretary of the State Denise Merrill was joined by students from Kingswood Oxford School to randomly select voting precincts to have results audited following the November 6 election. Five percent of polling places are subject to the audit, as prescribed by Connecticut General Statutes 9-320f. Those manually counted ballots will be matched against vote totals from optical scan machines.

“A manual audit of selected polling places is one of the strongest protections we have in place to ensure that the integrity of Connecticut’s elections is protected,” said Merrill. “In the era of foreign governments attempting to attack voters’ faith in our elections, we are working hard to make sure that every Connecticut voter knows that our elections remain secure. Our highest priority remains conducting free and fair elections that count every vote.”

The Office of the Secretary of the State is required by state and federal law to certify the vote totals on November 28, 2018 and audits must be complete no later than November 27, 2018. The offices required to be audited are: State Senate, State Representative, and Judge of Probate.
