Lt. Governor Bysiewicz and Education Commissioner Cardona Release Results of the 2020 Connecticut Student Mock Election
(Hartford, CT) — Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz and state Department of Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona today released the results of the 2020 Connecticut Student Mock Election, a nonpartisan, educational program designed to encourage youth to become active voters once they are old enough to vote.
Forty-eight high school districts elected to participate in the 2020 Connecticut Student Mock Election, and 3,056 students voted. The mock election was held by the Office of the Lt. Governor in partnership with the state Department of Education. The voter education program was the first of its kind provided by the state.
“Throughout this initiative, I had the opportunity to speak to and engage with so many high school students across our state about the importance of voting and civic participation. Our youth have the power to change the world. And, I know our future is bright because of the number of young people who have expressed interest in public service. Thank you to all the students, teachers, and principals who participated in this initiative and let our youth make their voice heard. This initiative would not have been made possible without the tireless work of Commissioner Cardona and the state Department of Education,” said Lt. Governor Bysiewicz.
“We are grateful for Lt. Governor Bysiewicz’s partnership on this important lesson in civics that encourages our students to make connections beyond the walls of the classroom and apply purpose to a civic responsibility in which they will soon take part. They are deepening their understanding of the importance of voting, how it affects them, and the role they play in the process of selecting the people who represent our towns, state and country,” said Commissioner Cardona. “The most powerful learning happens when students are given a platform to express their unique voice as they analyze important questions and issues with their peers. Our state should take pride in seeing so many school communities come together to engage students in this valuable experience.”
From Oct. 19 to Oct. 30, students had the opportunity to cast their ballot for their choice of President. Students voted for the same presidential candidates registered Connecticut voters will choose from on Election Day.
Under this initiative, students were introduced to the voting process and the power of voting. The mock election took place virtually to ensure every student – whether they were learning from home or in the classroom – were able to participate while protecting their health and safety.
The 2020 Connecticut Student Mock Election was an academic exercise and was not designed to predict the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election. The views expressed were those of the participating students.
