Subject:            Procedures for NIMS Training Credit

In order to clarify procedures to apply review training credit to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) training curriculum as required by the Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) the following procedures are being implemented effective for any past or present training in this area.

NIMS training is acceptable as follows:

  1. Classroom instruction conducted by a certified POSTC instructor holding endorsement area #627 (Curriculum Area VI, Patrol Procedures) up to a maximum of two (2) hours.
  2. Classroom instruction conducted by a certified CT Fire Academy instructor or Department of Health/EMS certified instructor utilizing official FEMA IS-700 curriculum up to a maximum of two (2) hours.
  3. On line training offered at www.training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/is700.asp with the IS-700 certificate of completion is acceptable and one (1) hour of POSTC review training may be applied towards elective credit hours in Area VI Patrol Procedures.

Documentation:

  1. Instruction provided by POSTC certified instructors should be documented on a POSTC Review Training Credit form.
  2. Instruction provided by non-POSTC certified instructors, i.e. Fire/EMS instructors, shall have a letter written by the instructor including name, time, date, list of attendees and course length (maximum POSTC credit of 2 hours).
  3. If training was received on-line, a copy of the FEMA certificate of successful completion must be maintained in the officer’s agency training file.

The NIMS training is not a POSTC mandated training subject, but should be applied to the Elective Area VI (Patrol Procedures #627).

All records are to be maintained by the agency/police department in the officer’s training file for audit purposes.

Questions concerning NIMS training credit should be addressed to Mr. Gary Pfeifer, Compliance Officer, Certification Division.
