Gov. Malloy Directs Flags to Half-Staff Sunday in Recognition of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that U.S. and state flags in Connecticut will be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, October 8, 2017, in recognition of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, an annual observance honoring the sacrifices of fallen firefighters throughout the country. Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags – including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise – should also be lowered during this same duration of time.
“Firefighters display an extraordinary amount of dedicated courage and fearlessness in their service protecting our communities and keeping the people of our state and our nation safe, oftentimes putting their own lives at risk to ensure the protection of others,” Governor Malloy said. “We will never forget the sacrifices of those firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty – they are heroes and we will always honor their service.”
“We are grateful for the courage embodied by our firefighters and their families,” Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman said. “So many have given their lives in service, and we will never forget them or the legacies they left in our communities.
