Gov. Malloy: Special Elections to Fill Four Anticipated Probate Judge Vacancies in Sixteen Towns to be Held This Fall
Vacancies Expected Due to Upcoming Retirements of Probate Judges Throughout the Next Year
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that special elections to fill expected vacancies in four Judge of Probate districts will be held on the same day as the next general election on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
The four districts consist of 16 municipalities throughout the state. They include:
- Meriden Probate District (vacancy anticipated February 18, 2018): Meriden
- Saybrook Probate District (vacancy anticipated July 28, 2018): Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Saybrook, Westbrook
- Tobacco Valley Probate District (vacancy anticipated August 17, 2017): Bloomfield, East Granby, Suffield, Windsor Locks
- Waterbury Probate District (vacancy anticipated June 2, 2018): Waterbury, Wolcott
Vacancies in each of the four districts are anticipated to occur either later this year or in 2018 when the current office holders respectively reach the state’s mandatory retirement age of 70 for judges.
In order to facilitate cost efficiencies for the impacted towns and cities, Governor Malloy is calling for special elections to fill the anticipated vacancies to be held on the same date as the next general election in November. The winners of those special elections will then assume office upon the retirement of the incumbent and fulfill the remainder of that district’s four-year term.
Under state law, upon a vacancy for Judge of Probate, the Governor is required to issue a Writ of Election and select a date for an election. The Governor filed the writs last week.
