Gov. Malloy Statement on Decision by Attorney General Sessions to Rescind Plan that Would Reduce the Use of Private Prisons
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement regarding a widely reported memo issued today by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinding an order from the previous administration that began a process to phase out the use of private prisons by the federal government:
“Today’s decision by Attorney General Sessions is exactly why the majority of Democrats in the United States Senate voted against his confirmation. At a time when many states, including Connecticut, are closing prisons because of a rapidly declining crime rate and reforms within the criminal justice system, the Trump Administration wants to return to the failed policies of the past and lock up more Americans – harming families and communities.
“Connecticut – under a Republican Governor – experimented with outsourcing prisons and it was a disaster for the state. Furthermore, correctional officers work with some of the most dangerous in our society and they deserve the protections provided by public service employment – protections often not found in private prisons. I am inviting Attorney General Sessions to come visit our Department of Correction facilities to witness up close a modern correctional system that focuses on reducing recidivism among offenders, while at the same time making our communities safer.”
