Gov. Malloy Statement on the Nomination of Scott Pruitt as Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today released the following statement regarding reports that President-elect Donald Trump intends to nominate Scott Pruitt to serve as Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:

“The nomination of Scott Pruitt to lead the EPA is cynical and deeply unsettling. It makes no sense to choose a person to lead an agency who has been a vociferous critic of the core, underlying mission of that very agency. This nomination also raises many questions in regards to whether the EPA would be able to actively combat the impacts of climate change if the person at the helm disregards overwhelming scientific evidence that climate change is having a major effect on our planet.

“We’ve taken significant actions in recent years to do our part to combat climate change, protect Long Island Sound, and implement resiliency efforts as we face more severe weather. Connecticut has been a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions – we’ve already reached a reduction to below 1990 levels and we’re well on track to being 10 percent below those levels by 2020. And nationally, our country has also taken major steps to aggressively tackle this problem. We cannot move backwards on the progress we’re making.”

Under the leadership of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Klee and his staff, in addition to the tireless advocates throughout our state, Connecticut has become a national leader in addressing the very real issue of climate change. Connecticut is rapidly deploying more renewable clean energy sources, focusing on energy efficiency, financing renewable and efficiency programs through our first-in-the-nation Green Bank and we are reducing carbon emissions from power plants through our participation in the multi-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Connecticut is the first state in the nation to be certified as range confident for the use of electric vehicles thanks to our network of electric car charging stations across the state.
