Gov. Malloy Announces Commissioner Murray to Leave Department of Developmental Services Early Next Year

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has been informed by Department of Developmental Services (DDS) Commissioner Morna Murray that she intends to depart from her position with the agency early next year to pursue other professional opportunities. Commissioner Murray, who joined the administration in February 2015, will continue to serve in her current capacity and oversee a transition period prior to her departure.

“Commissioner Murray is a diligent public servant whose skills and experience have been a tremendous asset to DDS and to the State of Connecticut,” Governor Malloy said. “DDS has seen transformative change under her leadership, including expanding work opportunities, increasing the number of individuals who direct their own care, and implementing a long-term transition of a significant number of state-run residential and day services to high-quality community providers. Her staunch advocacy for the comprehensive needs of children and adults with disabilities will have a lasting effect. I wish Morna the best in her next endeavor, and I have no doubt that we will continue to build upon the real progress she has brought to DDS.”

“Morna and her team have done extraordinary work to ensure the strongest programs and services for Connecticut’s children and adults with disabilities,” Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman said. “She has my gratitude for her diligence and compassion, and my deepest respect for being such a positive messenger. I wish her the best of luck in her next position.”

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve Connecticut’s adults and children with developmental and intellectual disabilities as Commissioner of DDS,” Commissioner Murray said. “I am proud of the progress we have made in the last two years, and the bridges that DDS – in collaboration with individuals, families, and providers – have built to a more sustainable future for service delivery in our state in multiple areas. These include the transition of day and residential services to high quality community providers, increased employment opportunities, and the empowerment of individuals to make decisions about their own care. Together, we have tackled many challenges, and are in the midst of great change. I have faith that positive change will continue in the hands of our staff at DDS and all the many stakeholders in the disabilities community who care so very deeply and work tirelessly for people whose lives are infinitely valuable and worthwhile. I am grateful beyond words to the individuals and families whom I met and came to know during my tenure. They inspire us all with their love, courage, and steadfast commitment to doing what is right. I leave the agency with confidence that the dedicated staff and leadership at DDS will continue to partner with the larger disabilities community in our mutual goal of improving the lives of the people we support.”

Governor Malloy is conducting a search for a successor to serve as Developmental Services Commissioner.
