Gov. Malloy Announces Nicholas Donofrio to Step Down from Board of Regents, Selects Matt Fleury as New Chairman

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that Board of Regents for Higher Education Chairman Nicholas M. Donofrio will be stepping down from his position effective Friday, July 1, as his four-year term comes to an end. The Governor has selected Matt Fleury of Hartford, who currently serves as a member on the board, to serve as its next chairman.

"Nick has been an extraordinary leader of the Board of Regents, and I am grateful for his service and wish him well in the future," Governor Malloy said. "Matt has been an incredible asset to the board and I am thrilled that he has accepted this opportunity to serve as its chairman. He truly understands the importance of public higher education and is passionate about the vital role it plays in workforce development. As a proud product of public higher education himself, he is an example of the immense value these schools bring to our communities."

"It has been an honor and privilege to serve the State of Connecticut for the past four years as a member of the Board of Regents for Higher Education and as its Chairman. I am proud of the base we have established together for the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System. It has been a rewarding and fast-paced journey as we supported the changes required to meet the needs of the State of Connecticut and its citizens," Donofrio said. "Matt Fleury has been a trusted colleague every step along the way. I wish him and my colleagues continued success with this critical work."

Fleury has served as a member of the board since its creation in 2011, including through roles as chairman of its Finance and Infrastructure Committee, as a member of the Executive Committee, and on various presidential search committees.

In addition to his service on the board, Fleury is the President and CEO of the Connecticut Science Center in downtown Hartford, leading the center's ambitious educational agenda to serve children, families, schools and educators. He helped launch the Connecticut Science Center in his prior capacity with the Capital Region Development Authority, after professional experiences in corporate communications and journalism. He also serves as a board and executive committee member of the international Association of Science and Technology Centers, and as a board member of the MetroHartford Alliance.

Fleury graduated from Berkshire Community College in Massachusetts and holds an undergraduate degree in business and communications from Charter Oak State College. He also earned an MBA from the UConn School of Business.

"Our residents are Connecticut's finest asset, and the state colleges and universities must enable everyone to achieve his or her potential through high quality, accessible higher education," Fleury said. "It's been a tremendous privilege to collaborate with our management team, the campuses, the faculty and staff, and the students we serve, and to work with my very dedicated and talented colleagues on the board. I look forward to continuing our efforts together and supporting them in every way I can."
