Gov. Malloy Directs Flags to Remain at Half-Staff Monday in Recognition of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to remain at half-staff on Monday, December 7, 2015, in recognition of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The national observance honors the lives lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
Governor Malloy said, "On this day, we recognize the extraordinary sacrifices of all who served in Pearl Harbor nearly 75 years ago, in addition to the over 2,400 people - both military and civilian - who lost their lives in the attack. This day of remembrance is also an opportunity to thank all of those who served our country during World War II, courageously responding to the call of duty. We are grateful to all who serve in our military to protect our freedoms and stand up for democracy."
Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman said, "After the devastation wrought at Pearl Harbor, this country coalesced around our military men and women in a way that is distinctly American. To this day, the Greatest Generation reminds us that we are all obligated to serve in defense of our democracy and our freedoms. From honoring the sacrifices of our warriors and the families supporting them, to ensuring our Armed Forces have the training and tools they need to achieve their missions, to protecting our veterans in their civilian lives, we are united. On December 7, we honor those we lost and those who fought, and reflect on the many lessons learned when a nation came together in pursuit of liberty and justice for all."
Flags are also currently at half-staff in accordance with a proclamation issued by President Barack Obama last week to honor the victims of the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California. Flags should remain at half-staff until sunset on Monday evening.
