Gov. Malloy & Lt. Gov. Wyman on Unanimous Committee Approval of Legislation Encouraging Equal Pay for Equal Work

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman released the following statements regarding the unanimous, bipartisan vote this afternoon by the General Assembly's Labor and Public Employees Committee in support of legislation the Governor introduced to encourage pay equity:

Governor Malloy said, "Standing up for pay equity - and basic equality - shouldn't be a partisan issue.  We should all support progress for women.  This bill, with unanimous and bipartisan support out of committee, outlaws 'pay secrecy' directives, which encourage discrimination and perpetuate the gender wage gap.  It affirms that workers have the right to discuss their own salary information without fear of retribution from their employer, ultimately bringing greater transparency to eliminate inequities in the workplace.  I want to thank the members of the committee, both Democrats and Republicans, for supporting this important bill."

Lt. Governor Wyman said, "This is a good first step in the effort to end pay secrecy and the wage discrimination that it nurtures.  Wage equality must extend to all employees without regard to race or gender - it's critical in efforts to support economic security and the development of a highly-skilled workforce.  I applaud the committee on this action."

The legislation is House Bill 6850 , An Act Concerning Pay Equity and Fairness.
