GOV. MALLOY RE-APPOINTS DORA SCHRIRO AS COMMISSIONER OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY SERVICES AND PUBLIC PROTECTION
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he intends to re-appoint Dora Schriro as Commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) when his second term in office begins on January 7, 2015.
"Thanks to the efforts of folks on the state, local and federal levels, in addition to community-based nonprofits and other community advocates, Connecticut is experiencing its lowest violent crime rate in four decades, twice as low as the national average," Governor Malloy said. "Working with Commissioner Schriro and the team of law enforcement officials at DESPP, we can expand these practices, build on these efforts, and improve the quality of life in communities throughout Connecticut."
"I am honored to be re-appointed by Governor Malloy to lead the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection and support the remarkable men and women who make-up our agency's workforce," Commissioner Schriro said. Commissioner Schriro began the position as head of DESPP
in January 2014
, becoming the first woman to head the state's public safety operations. The agency is responsible for management over all of the state's public safety matters and is comprised of the Division of State Police; the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security; the Division of Statewide Emergency Telecommunications; the Division of Scientific Services; the Division of Police Officer Standards and Training Council; and the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control.
Under Commissioner Schriro leadership, the department's major accomplishments include:

Equipping all Troopers with Narcan; to date, 5 lives have been saved

Continued integration of the recently consolidated six divisions of DESPP

Significantly reducing the backlogs at the State Crime Lab

Implementing school security infrastructure standards

Instituting a Lethality Risk Assessment when responding to all Domestic Violence calls

Led DEMHS through an Emergency Management Accreditation Process

Improving consolidated dispatch: reopening all Troops 24/7, redirecting most Administrative back to the Troops

Readying the agency for the deployment of the Next Generation 9-1-1 system

Chaired the Governor's Emergency Communications Task Force, which developed strategies to convey both emergency and non-emergency communications to non-English speaking residents
