FRIDAY: GOV. MALLOY PROMOTES 'SALES TAX-FREE WEEK' IN BERLIN; HIGHLIGHTS TOURIST ATTRACTIONS ON THE SOUTH-CENTRAL CONN. SHORELINE
(HARTFORD, CT) - On Friday at noon, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will hold a news conference at Mickey Finn's - a clothing retailer located in Berlin - to remind residents about the state's upcoming "Sales Tax-Free Week" when most items of clothing and footwear selling for less than $300 will be exempt from the state sales and use tax. The Governor will be joined by Department of Revenue Services Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan and other state and local officials.
In the afternoon, Governor Malloy will visit several locations on Connecticut's south-central shoreline to highlight popular tourism destinations the state has to offer visitors. In Connecticut, travel and tourism activities generate $11.5 billion annually in economic activity and are responsible for 110,000 jobs.
First, the Governor will visit the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven, which features the oldest continually running suburban trolley line in the United States. The museum features nearly 100 vintage vehicles and artifacts from the "trolley era."
Second, the Governor will stop for lunch at the Lobster Shack in Branford. The family-run restaurant, with its water-front views, has become a local favorite.
Following that, Governor Malloy will explore the shoreline area of Branford, which will include a stop at Ashley's Ice Cream.
Later, the Governor will visit the Henry Whitfield State Museum in Guilford. Dating back to 1639, the historic Henry Whitfield State Museum is Connecticut's oldest house and New England's oldest stone house. Having served many purposes throughout its history, the "Old Stone House" is now a popular and renowned site today for special programs and events, and attracts visitors from around the world.
Finally, Governor Malloy will visit R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison. Cultivating a culturally engaging experience by offering a robust selection of books and gifts, a café, author speaker events and celebrity book signings, R.J. Julia is a popular and highly regarded regional destination.
