GOV. MALLOY ANNOUNCES ECONOMIC ASSISTANCE GRANTS AWARDED TO SMALL TOWNS THROUGHOUT CONNECTICUT
Barkhamsted, Cornwall, Kent, Ledyard, Middlefield, North Stonington, Rocky Hill and Waterford Receive STEAP Grants
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced a series of grants under the state's Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) that will be awarded to eight towns throughout Connecticut for the purposes of funding a variety of economic development, community improvement and quality-of-life projects.
"Working with our small towns, we can identify important capital projects that improve the quality-of-life for residents, strengthen local infrastructure, encourage business growth and create jobs," Governor Malloy said. "The investments we are announcing today will help these towns move projects forward that ultimately make Connecticut a better place to live and do business."
"It is so important for state and local governments to work together to improve our neighborhoods, economic centers, and quality of life," said Lt. Governor Wyman. "Governor Malloy and I recognize that all communities face budget challenges - these grants will help towns address infrastructure problems, improve life for residents, and make a difference for taxpayers."
The STEAP grants announced today are as follows:
Barkhamsted
$500,000 to repair two bridges that cross Beaver Brook on Park Road. The bridges and road incurred significant damage from past storms. The Department of Transportation rated one of the bridges "structurally deficient" and "functionally obsolete". The other bridge was damaged when Beaver Brook flooded during Hurricane Irene.
Cornwall
$100,000 for structural repairs to the North Cornwall Meeting House, including reconstruction of the steeple and repairs to the building itself.
Kent
$500,000 to purchase an existing vacant 1.6 acre lot in the center of town to add a municipal parking lot, a building with public restrooms, and a town park/village green, none of which currently exist in Kent. Tourism is a significant driver of Kent's economy and this project would make the town an even more attractive tourist destination.
Ledyard
$500,000 for town center improvements including parking, lighting, landscaping and crosswalk expansion. When complete, this project will connect all municipally owned properties in the center of town with a continuous improved streetscape.
Middlefield
$131,000 to rehabilitate the Miller Road Bridge over the Coginchaug River. This award would be combined with a 2012 STEAP award to complete the project. The bridge was built in 1936 and in need of the structural repairs to ensure public safety.
North Stonington
$245,400 for a water line extension (1500 ft) that will serve 12 residential homes, fairgrounds, the Grange Hall and the Old Fire Station. It will also provide a connection to the town's new EMS Center and a future water tower.
Rocky Hill
$444,000 to replace the 10-year-old, artificial turf field at McVicar Field located at Rocky Hill High School. The field is used for high school football, soccer and lacrosse games.
Waterford
$500,000 for design and physical improvements to Mago Point Park, including streetscaping and public parking. The project also includes façade improvements for Mago Point businesses.
