FRIDAY: GOV. MALLOY SPEAKS TO STUDENTS COMPLETING UCONN HEALTH SUMMER PROGRAMS; HIGHLIGHTS TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN LITCHFIELD COUNTY

(HARTFORD, CT) - On Friday at noon, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will speak to approximately 220 high school and college students at a commencement ceremony in Farmington marking the culmination of a summer enrichment experience with the UConn Health Center's Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs. Designed to stimulate interest in the health professions, the students, who come from diverse backgrounds including those underrepresented in the health professions, participated in rigorous and educational six, seven, or nine-week programs.

Following that, Governor Malloy will visit several locations in Litchfield County for an opportunity to highlight popular tourism destinations the region has to offer visitors. In Connecticut, travel and tourism activities generate $11.5 billion annually in economic activity and are responsible for 110,000 jobs.

First, the Governor will visit the Nodine's Smokehouse retail store in Goshen. The popular, family-owned business is a leading manufacturer of gourmet smoked meat, poultry, fish, and cheese, delivering products to upscale restaurants and specialty grocers across the country.

Second, Governor Malloy will visit Arethusa Farm Dairy in Litchfield. The farm owners, with a background as executives of the upscale shoe brand Manolo Blahnik, have brought their attention to detail, style and innovation to their farm and the exceptional care they provide to their award-winning cows. The farm produces its own yogurt, milk, cheese and ice cream, which can be purchased at the farm or at local retailers.

Finally, the Governor will visit the Connecticut Valley Winery in New Hartford. The business has produced award-winning wines at a picturesque, beautiful location that has become a popular destination on the Connecticut Wine Trail.
