TUESDAY: GOV. MALLOY MEETS WITH NEW ENGLAND GOVERNORS ON OPIATE ADDICTION; SIGNS LEGISLATION ON DRUG OVERDOSE PREVENTION
(HARTFORD, CT) - On Tuesday morning, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will meet with Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, Governor Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, Governor Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, and Governor Peter Shumlin of Vermont to discuss a regional approach to opioid addiction. Following their meeting, the governors will hold a media availability to announce a strategy addressing the epidemic that has impacted families and communities across the region.
In the afternoon, Governor Malloy will hold a bill signing ceremony in Wethersfield to commemorate the adoption of a new law that authorizes anyone to administer an opioid antagonist - such as Narcan - to a person he or she believes, in good faith, is experiencing an opioid-related drug overdose. Narcan is an effective prescription medicine that reverses an opioid overdose. Previously, the law allowed only licensed health care practitioners to administer the medication without being civilly or criminally liable for the action. The legislation is Public Act 14-61 , An Act Providing Immunity to a Person who Administers an Opioid Antagonist to Another Person Experiencing an Opioid-Related Drug Overdose .
