GOV. MALLOY ON NAVY ANNOUNCEMENT OF $17.6 BILLION CONTRACT WITH ELECTRIC BOAT FOR BLOCK IV SUBMARINE PRODUCTION
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today praised the U.S. Navy's announcement that it has awarded Groton-based General Dynamics' Electric Boat a contract valued at $17.6 billion for the construction and delivery of the next block (Block IV) of Virginia-class submarines.
"This contract reflects the tremendous talent of our highly skilled workforce. The men and women of Electric Boat continue to deliver each Virginia class boat ahead of schedule and under budget and are routinely held up as the model of efficiency and quality in a major DOD acquisition program.
"These Virginia class submarines will play a key role in our nation's defense and are critical assets in the Pentagon's national security strategy. Our Connecticut delegation has worked tirelessly to help the Navy fund two submarines per year in order to meet its operational commitments, and I commend them for their good work."
Electric Boat is the prime contractor for the design and construction of nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy, and has subcontracted with almost 500 companies located across Connecticut. Nationwide, Electric Boat has a supplier network of more than 5,000 firms located in all 50 states. Upon delivery to the Navy, the Virginia-class submarines will initially be homeported at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.
