GOV. MALLOY, CONNECTICUT HOUSE DELEGATION CALL FOR IMMEDIATE VOTE ON UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION EXTENSION
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy and the Connecticut House delegation have each written letters to federal officials urging immediate action to be taken on legislation extending Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC).
The Connecticut House delegation sent a letter to Speaker Boehner refuting his claims that an extension of Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) would be "unworkable" for states, and calling for a vote on the Senate-passed extension before the upcoming two-week district work period. House Republican leadership has claimed that it would be difficult for states to implement the extension, and have refused to hold a vote on the issue.
Demonstrating that states are willing to overcome any hurdles to implementing an EUC extension, Governor Malloy sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez expressing support for passage of an EUC extension, writing that "failure to act now will only do further harm to our long-term unemployed and the broader US economy. And the benefits of an extension of EUC far outweigh the challenges to implement S.2148."
The Connecticut House Delegation sent Speaker Boehner the letter to show that "Connecticut is ready to act."
Since EUC expired in December, more than 48,000 people in Connecticut have had the modest lifeline of unemployment insurance cut off while they look for work.
