GOV. MALLOY URGES LEGAL ACTION TO RECOVER LOSSES FROM CON EDISON POWER FAILURE
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy on Monday afternoon wrote a letter to Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast requesting legal action be taken to recover losses resulting from the power failure last month of a Con Edison feeder cable that supplies power to Metro-North's New Haven Line.
"Just as Con Edison compensated New York residents in 2006, when customers in Astoria and Long Island City were left without power for a week, Con Edison should accept responsibility for the costs imposed on commuters and on Connecticut taxpayers as a result of the recent failure," Governor Malloy wrote.
The Governor said the recovered losses must include additional project costs, supplemental service costs, lost system revenues and fare credits to the customers who were impacted.
"As Governor of Connecticut, and on behalf of Connecticut taxpayers and the 62,500 commuters who rely on Metro-North Railroad and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority each and every day, I am requesting that you initiate all possible legal actions to recover the complete costs from Con Edison resulting from the September 25, 2013, Con Edison power-supply failure in Mount Vernon," Governor Malloy wrote. "As Con Edison testified at today's Senate Commerce Committee hearing, the failure is directly attributable to Con Edison. The negligence that underlies the outage must be rectified by Con Edison."
