GOV. MALLOY TO CON EDISON: REPAIRS TO MTA FEEDER CABLE NEED TO BE COMPLETED SOONER
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy on Friday afternoon wrote a letter to Kevin Burke, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Consolidated Edison Corporation, urging the utility company to prioritize repairs to the MTA feeder cables on the New Haven Line and explaining that the current scheduled completion date is unacceptable.
"When I met with Con Ed and MTA leadership on September 26, I was informed that these repairs typically take two to three weeks. I understand that the current estimate for completing the repair is not until October 22, almost a month after the cable failed," Governor Malloy wrote. "This corridor is too critical to our economy to have this repair delayed any longer. I urge you to apply all possible resources and scheduling techniques to complete this project much sooner than October 22."
Governor Malloy also reiterated his appeal for Con Ed to reimburse MTA and the State of Connecticut for the costs associated with the service outage, including service expenses, lost revenue and customer refunds.
"The importance of this line to our local economy cannot be understated," he wrote. "By conservative estimates, the recent disruption caused a loss of $62 million to my state's economy. Another disruption will only amplify that cost. It is in the long term interest of our region to have a safe and reliable New Haven Line."
