STATEMENT FROM GOV. MALLOY'S GENERAL COUNSEL LUKE BRONIN ON CAMPAIGN FINANCE LEGISLATION
(HARTFORD, CT) - Luke Bronin, General Counsel to Governor Dannel P. Malloy, today released the following statement concerning campaign finance legislation currently being debated in the Connecticut House of Representatives:
"As the first candidate for governor in Connecticut's landmark public financing system, Governor Malloy has been a passionate and consistent advocate for taking private money out of politics. The Governor strongly disagrees with the Citizens United decision. But since the U.S. Supreme Court has said we cannot limit independent expenditures, we can at least make sure that everyone knows where the money comes from.
"Last year, Governor Malloy vetoed a different version of this bill because of concerns that it would not withstand a constitutional challenge. We believe this bill strikes the right balance, respecting the right to free speech, while at the same time establishing one of the most demanding transparency and disclosure requirements in the country."
