GOV. MALLOY: STATE RELEASES DRAFT SUPPLEMENTAL ASSISTANCE FUNDING PLAN FOR PUBLIC COMMENT

More than $71 Million will Assist Communities in Their Rebuilding Effort Following Historic Storm

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today released for public comment a plan that outlines the distribution of supplemental funding that was allocated to the state following damage suffered from Super Storm Sandy. The $71,820,000 in funding will help communities most impacted by Sandy to rebuild.

"This funding isn't just about getting people's lives back to normal following the devastation that occurred last year," Governor Malloy said. "It's also about making sure that when things are rebuilt, it's done in a way that makes them more resilient to future storms.

"While the damage we suffered from Storm Sandy was bad, we know that it could have been far, far worse," the Governor continued. "One needs only to look to our neighbors in New York and New Jersey to see how much worse it could have been. This first allocation will help our rebuilding efforts, but the real goal is receiving funding that will help us to mitigate damage from future storms. Working in conjunction with our state's Congressional delegation, we will get our fair share from Washington so that our state is better prepared the next time we face a 'once-in-a-century' storm."

Funding from this tranche is intended to address unmet housing and economic revitalization needs based on information provided by the Federal Emergency Management Administration and the Small Business Administration. The allocation to all states substantially affected by Sandy, including Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, is consistent with the data supplied by these federal agencies.

In addition to rebuilding efforts, part of the funding will be set aside for the planning of future mitigation work. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has yet to allocate most of its supplemental funding, particularly the third tranche, which can be used for infrastructure hardening projects. The state is laying the groundwork for this allocation so that funds can be deployed in the most effective way.

The deadline for public comment is April 26, 2013. A copy of the proposal can be found on the Department of Economic and Community Development's website . Additionally, drafts of the plan have been submitted to all municipalities, public housing authorities, and other community partners as identified in the state's consolidated plan for housing/community development.
