GOV. MALLOY: "LIVING THE MISSION" AT DDS WILL IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR CLIENTS

New Mission and Vision Statement Sets Expanded Direction for Clients and Caregivers

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Terrence W. Macy, Ph.D., Commissioner of Connecticut's Department of Developmental Services (DDS), today launched the agency's new mission and vision statement by video conference from the DDS Hartford headquarters. Living the Mission sets a tone of expanded community inclusivity and offers guidance for private and non-profit caregivers. Hundreds of DDS staff and stakeholders at offices throughout Connecticut participated in the announcement.

"The Department of Developmental Services' new mission and vision statement helps to ensure that everyone plays a role in building strong and vibrant communities," said Governor Malloy. "Living the Mission gives people with intellectual disabilities the support and tools they need to help make Connecticut a great place to work and live."

Over eighteen months, DDS and their partners crafted the new mission and vision statement which defines the Department's purpose and primary objectives. The new statement provides direction to people who support individuals with developmental disabilities, and inspires them to help these individuals lead satisfying lives as fully contributing members of their communities.

"Individuals with intellectual disability should be supported to live, learn, work, and enjoy community life," said Commissioner Macy. "We encourage them to use their personal strengths, talents, and passions; know their rights and responsibilities; and pursue opportunities to live the life they choose."

The launch was celebrated by DDS and community providers with many of the offices and residential settings holding ribbon cutting ceremonies.
