SUNDAY: GOV. MALLOY & CONGRESSMAN MURPHY HOLD NEWS CONFERENCE TO CALL FOR DROUGHT RELIEF FOR FARMERS
(HARTFORD, CT) - On Sunday at 11:00 a.m., Governor Dannel P. Malloy, Congressman Chris Murphy and Department of Agriculture Commissioner Steven Reviczky will hold a news conference at Tulmeadow Farm in West Simsbury to urge Congress to act on drought relief legislation. Connecticut farmers are being negatively impacted by the nationwide drought that is causing a shortage of feed for livestock, which could raise the price of groceries in the near future.
The Senate Farm Bill extends a disaster relief program aimed at livestock producers that expired at the end of 2011. While the U.S. Senate approved the disaster aid package, Republican leadership in the House did not call the bill for a vote prior to adjourning earlier this month. As a result of the inaction, aid is not likely to be approved until Congress returns in September.
