GOV. MALLOY TO TAKE LEAD ON TRANSPORTATION ISSUES FOR THE COALITION OF NORTHEASTERN GOVERNORS
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy was today named Lead Governor for Transportation by the Coalition of Northeastern Governors (CONEG). In this position, Governor Malloy will serve as the chief coordinator for advocacy and policy advancement of transportation initiatives for CONEG.
"Increasing transit opportunities is an important way to support and encourage economic development," said Governor Malloy. "To that end, I have worked to support high-speed and commuter rail access in the State of Connecticut, and I believe that my experience in this field will provide some insight into improving transportation throughout the Northeast. I want to thank my fellow northeast governors for their confidence, and pledge to advocate strenuously on behalf of our region."
In order to support the regional economy of the Northeast, CONEG's transportation program works to:
-
Create a plan to offer safe and dependable commuter rail travel for citizens of the Northeastern region that meets current travel demands and encourages economic growth by providing intercity passenger rail services;
-
Ensure federal funding for an integrated transportation system by maintaining a strong relationship between the Northeast region and the federal government in order to ensure necessary funding for intercity passenger rail; and
-
Aid the coordination of transportation assets, such as passenger and freight rail systems, within the Northeast by assisting the steady flow of communication within the region.
CONEG is a non-partisan association of the governors of the seven northeastern states. Governor Malloy today is attending the 36th Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers in Burlington, Vermont.
