FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF-STAFF IN REMEMBRANCE OF WORLD WAR I VETERAN CORPORAL FRANK W. BUCKLES
(HARTFORD, CT) - As a mark of respect for the last surviving veteran of World War I, President Barack Obama has ordered the U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for Army Corporal Frank W. Buckles today, the day of his interment. Corporal Buckles died at 110 years old on February 22, 2011, and will be buried today in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. He served as an Army ambulance driver on the western front during WWI.
Following President Obama's proclamation and to honor Corporal Buckles, Governor Dannel P. Malloy ordered Connecticut flags to fly at half-staff as well.
U.S. and Connecticut flags are also flying at half-staff for Connecticut soldier Sgt. 1st Class Daehan Park who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Saturday. Sgt. 1st Class Park's funeral details have not yet been released.
