Hartford -- The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced it anticipates that two of the ten school based health centers operated under a DPH contract with private provider Optimus Health Care and its subcontractor Southwest Community Health Centers will be operational on Monday, March 2, 2009. Eight additional sites are currently being transitioned to the new operators, and are anticipated to open later in March.
“During the transition, we encourage city parents to bring their students who are in need of primary care services to their local community health center, many of which have night and weekend hours,” said DPH Commissioner J. Robert Galvin, MD, MPH, MBA. “DPH has been working closely with Optimus, Southwest, and city and Board of Education officials to finalize outstanding administrative issues in order to make all ten sites fully operational as quickly as possible.”
Optimus Health Care was awarded a contract in December by DPH through a competitive bid process to run the ten Bridgeport SBHCs, and will sub-contract to Southwest Community Health Center to run five of the ten centers. The City of Bridgeport previously ran the SBHC program and will do so through the end of February.
“It is unfortunate that this process was not able to move forward so that all the centers would be fully operational on March 2. But, we are confident that the new providers and the state DPH will be able to work through this transition and provide the same level of care that our children have received in the past within the first two weeks of operation,” said Mayor Bill Finch.
Pending approval of an access agreement by the Bridgeport Board of Education, which is scheduled to meet on Friday afternoon, the SBHC at Bassick High School, 1181 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, will open on Monday, March 2, 2009. The SBHC at Dunbar School is unaffected by the change, and will be open as usual on Monday, March 2, 2009.
The locations and hours of community health centers operated by Optimus Health Care and Southwest Community Health Center are listed on page two of this release.
