CONNECTICUT DPH LIFTS WATER ADVISORY FOR THE TOWNS OF EAST HARTFORD, GLASTONBURY, PORTLAND, SOUTH WINDSOR AND MANCHESTER
MDC CONTINUES DRINKING WATER TESTING AND SAMPLING FOR OTHERS
HARTFORD, (April 23, 2009) – The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) and the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) announce that MDC customers in the towns of East Hartford, Glastonbury, Portland, and South Windsor NO LONGER NEED TO BOIL WATER for consumption. The distribution systems in these towns were isolated yesterday from the Reservoir No. 6 service area. After several rounds of sampling, no organisms were found and DPH has determined the water may be consumed directly from the tap without boiling.
The DPH is requesting that MDC customers in the towns of Bloomfield, Windsor, Hartford, West Hartford, and parts of East Granby and Windsor Locks, continue to boil their drinking water for one minute as a precautionary measure through the weekend while rigorous testing continues throughout the system. This testing will determine if chlorination efforts have successfully eliminated the organisms from the drinking water.
All possible actions are being taken and all avenues explored to eliminate the presence of these microorganisms in the water as soon as possible. Among these actions is an increase of chlorine in the distribution system. While this increase is still within the acceptable limits established by the DPH, customers may notice a chlorine taste or odor in the tap water.
Customers in Rocky Hill, Newington, Farmington/Unionville, and Wethersfield continue not to be affected by this advisory. These areas are supplied by a separate water treatment facility and thus are not affected.
Updated information can be found on the District’s website www.themdc.com. Customers who have questions may contact the Metropolitan District at 278-7850 extension 3600. Additional information is also available at DPH’s web-site: http://www.ct.gov/dph/site/default.asp or by phone at 509-8000.
The MDC is a nonprofit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929.
