DMV-Approved Translators
 
If any document presented to DMV is in a language other than English, it must be translated by a CT DMV-approved translator. All translations must be accompanied by the original document. As of July 1st, 2015, the list of approved identity documents changed.
 

 

 

How to Become a DMV-Approved Translator

**All Pending DMV-Approved Translator applications are currently on hold**

 
There are three categories of CT DMV-approved translators: 
  1. Independent individual translators.
  2. Individual translators employed by a for-profit or not-for-profit organization.
  3. Translation Businesses listed on the current State of Connecticut Executive or Judicial Branch translation contract list.  
NOTE: If your business is not on the current translation contract list, individual translators who work for your business may apply under categories #1 or #2. 
 
Individual Applicants: CT DMV will include the name of the translation business you work for on the CT DMV Approved Translator List. Only an approved individual translator may translate documents for the DMV.

Individual requirements
Categories 1 and 2
  1 Fill out DMV Form DI-5. (Application for DMV-Approved Translator Status)
2 Provide current resume showing education and professional translation experience. 
3 Provide two (2) samples of translations (translation and original piece in foreign language) for each language.  NOTE:  Do not include personal information - remove or block name, address, date of birth and any other PII from the samples you submit. 
4 Mail completed application and other requirements to address below.
Business requirements
Category 3
1 Your translation business must be listed on the current State of Connecticut Executive or Judicial Branch translation contract list.
2 Fill out DMV Form DI-5. (Application for DMV-Approved Translator Status).
3 Proof of current State of Connecticut Executive or Judicial Branch contract for translation business.
4 Mail completed application and other requirements to address below.

Once you apply:
  • DMV will review application, resume, translation samples and verify required certification (if applicable).
  • DMV will approve or deny translator applications based on the above designated requirements, application and any record of complaints.
  • Approved individual translators and translation businesses will be assigned an Approved Translator Number that must be included on any all translation performed for CT DMV.
  • DMV will notify translator by mail if they have been approved or denied.
  • Translators that have been approved will have their information placed on Connecticut DMV Approved Translators List that is published on Connecticut DMV website.
